From individual problems …
High and ever-increasing rents, unpaid or insufficient wages, sanctions on welfare payments, or restrictions against people without a German passport: every day in Lichtenrade, we are confronted with these and similar problems. It often seems as if there is nothing we can do about it. But that’s not true—we are fighting back!
Landlords, bosses, job centers, and immigration offices use many tricks against us that are actually illegal. But only if we know our rights can we do something about it. That’s why we, as a neighborhood union, offer weekly solidarity counseling. You can come here with your problems and we will try to solve them together with you.
… towards collective power
Advising people is a big part of what we do as a neighborhood union. But giving legal advice for individual problems isn’t enough in the long run. That’s because a lot of us have the same issues with landlords, bosses, job centers, or immigration offices. This is because many laws are unfair and don’t protect us, but instead protect the profits of landlords or bosses. Tenancy law provides for constantly rising rents. Labor rights have been deliberately dismantled in recent decades. And the regulations governing citizen’s income and residence rights contradict fundamental human rights in many respects.
That is why we must fight not only for the enforcement of our rights, but also for fundamental improvements and changes. However, this can only work if we join forces as neighbors in the neighborhood union.
The neighborhood union is our shared tool, which we use today to stand up for our rights and fight for a just society without exploitation, poverty, and racism in the future.
